Abstract

Pondok pesantren(Islamic boarding school)has improved in many aspects, including the qualityin Indonesia.However, since 2020, sexual and physical abuses have occurred in pesantrenthat attractpublicattention. This phenomenon indirectly made many parties question the existence of pesantren.Based on the government directives,pesantrenwassupposedto bea safe and comfortable environmentfor learners. This paper presentsthe efforts of four pesantrenin Indonesia to become child-friendly places. Findingsbased on the qualitative study reported in this papershow that child-friendlypesantrenprogram has been initiated and developed by main figures, such asKyai/nyai(pesantrenleader), ustadz/ustadzah (teachers), and students(santri). Each pesantrenhasalmost the same exertions, namely optimizing three main areas; subjects, management, and infrastructure, but thecharacteristicsof the pesantrenstill impact the detail stages employed.For instance, Salaf pesantrenstillstrive traditionally, while modern and semi-modern pesantrenhave begun to adapt to technological advances and currentneeds.Keywords: Child-FriendlyPesantren,Pesantreneducation, PesantreninIndonesia, Physical and Sexual Violence inPesantren.
