Abstract

This paper intends to elaborate on two important issues, namely how the relation of jihad and the clash of civilizations in the perspective of Abou El Fadl, and how these perspectives be read in the context of postcolonial Muslim diaspora identity . To provide an answer to the above interpretation, postcolonial approaches will be used in this paper. In general, post-colonial theory and discourse is used to counter the binary oppositions, or distinctions between the dichotomous nature of Islam and the West. Among the key findings of this study is that Abou El Fadl refuse expressly the relation between jihad and the clash of civilizations thesis. Thesis about the clash of civilizations thinks has many methodological weaknesses, and jihad for him away from the feel of destructive force for civilization itself. Meanwhile views on jihad and the clash of civilizations shows a typical post-colonial intellectual identity as a product of Abou El Fadl encounter with the intellectual and cultural traditions of the West.
