Abstract

Not all Arabs, while they were Arabic native speakers, were able to understand the Quran in the Prophet era. Therefore, some mufassir(interpreters) use jahiliyah syrir(pre-Islamic poetry) as a means to understand the Quran. Al-Thabari, one of prominent Islamic scholars, was one of them. The problem is that, according to Thaha Husein (a controversial modern Egyptian intellectual), a lot of the Syi'ir is not authentic so that it does not guarantee a correct comprehension of the Quran. This article focuses on Thaha Husein's thoughts on the authenticity of the pre-Islamic poetry descriptively-philosophically by investigating his
arguments in his famous book 'Fi Syi'ri al-Jahilr (On Pre-Islamic Poetry) which was then changed into 'Fi al-Jahili' (On Pre-Islamic Literature) with some revisions. This study mainly discusses the authenticity of the pre-Islamic poetry, its urgency in interpreting the Quran, and how the Quran views pre-Islam Arab society. It is revealed in the article that a lot of pre-Islamic poetry was not composed in the era of ignorance (Jahiliyah) by pre-Islamic Arab poet but by plagiarists in the era of Abbasiyah Empire for some purposes: political, religion, Qishshah, tribal fanaticism, and hadith narrators. Thus, it is reasonable, according to Thaha
Husein, that a lot of the pre-Islamic poetry neither fit in with pre-Islam Arab nor describe objectively pre-Islamic Arab society. It is sufficient to refer to the
Quran, which certainly valid, to obtain objective descriptions of the pre-Islamic Arab society.
