Abstract

This paper deals with analysis of the hadith text which literally emphasizes on the encouragement to do holy war. This hadith reads ‚whoever died while he has not had done jihad and do not intend to, then he will die in a hypocrite manner‛. This hadith if understood uncritically will lead to some violent actions in the
name of religion. This is caused in part by the literal interpretation of religious texts. This critical study, in the perspective of the hadith studies, is called Takhri>j al-Hadith. This study is inteded to
contextualize the Islamic teachings related to the jihad concept in particular in order that the basic principle of Islam as a mercy to all creatures is preserved.
