Abstract
Hadith criticism is a long-established tradition dating back to the time of the Companions and Successors (Tābi'īn) and continued growing until became a scientific discipline with its principles and rules. Nevertheless, some scholars,
both Western and Muslim, have been criticized for such discipline and regarded it unscientific method and, therefore, need to be re-examined. This article attempt to
highlight the efforts of Muslim scholars in establishing this scientific discipline. By using historical and critical analysis method, the study concluded that the
tradition of hadith criticism which has been done by those scholars since their early periods show its accuracy in determining the validity of a hadith, either in the level of theory or application as well.
